About this space

La Colline aux Licornes is a quaint haven in the heart of the Charente Limousine, a beautiful hilly region set in rural France. We are ecological and low-waste, with 3 rooms available to rent. Breakfast is included, and a simple and tasty cuisine (local and/or organic) is proposed in the evening for those who wish, within the framework of a participative formula - everyone helps a little. We are low-key and we like to exchange with our guests, while being respectful of their need for quiet time, meditation or contemplation. La Colline aux Licornes is also home to "Des Trésors dans L'ArbraChats", a shop and brocante fully benefiting the cats rescued by L'ArbraChats association. It is open every Saturday from 2pm to 5pm, and to our guests by appointment.

The space

We have 3 bedrooms for guests : a very large one on the ground floor with a large bed (200cm x 180 cm, in between US Queen and King) made of 2 twin beds, a normal bedroom on the smaller side upstairs fitted with a single bed (190 x 80cm) and another small bedroom located upstairs as well, and fitted with another 190 x 80cm bed.

The three bedrooms share one bathroom upstairs (shower, no usable tub, toilets). There are other toilets on the ground floor.

This listing is for the large bedroom on the ground floor, pictured. If you have a larger group, please click here for the second one: https://www.vegvisits.com/rooms/vegan-b&b-in-the-charente-limousine--rural-france---additional-bedroom--44984. Third listing to come up soon. Please note that as these are in the attic, it gets hot during the summer. In case of extreme heat outside, a fan is available, making sleeping comfortable unless you are used to sleeping in cool rooms only.

Due to the compact floor plan and lack of sound proofing, we only rent to one party at a time (1 to 3 bedrooms).

You are welcome to enjoy the garden - one side is kept tidy to sunbathe, read (feel free to browse the bookshelves) or relax, another part is currently left wild, and rubber boots or protective shoes are needed there. The living room is accessible during the day.

The kitchen

A simple breakfast is provided in the morning (bread, jam, coffee or tea, cereals, fruits) and guests can help themselves to tea/water/water+syrup during the day. An honesty bar is available for beer and wine.

There's a toaster, electric kettle, French press, refrigerator, oven.

Dinner is available upon request for a reasonable fee, since vegan options are very limited in the area. In which case, the preparation is collaborative: everybody helps a little to prep, cook and/or set the table and do the dishes.

Other things to note

- My cat Sangpo lives on the property. While peaceful and social, he likes his personal space to be respected.

- Parking is available in the large courtyard.

- There is no Wifi at the moment. Using your phone as a hotspot with 4G works well, although some areas of the house have weak signal.

- No TV either - but a great show outside:)

- The surroundings are very quiet, save the few tractors that go by.

A native French speaker originally from Paris, I lived 22 years in New York and worked in the wine industry before moving back to France in December 2020. I yearned for nature and quiet and fell in love with the Charente area. I currently live with my companion cat Sangpo in a hamlet of 4 houses, 12 cats, 3 hens, 2 goats and 1 rooster.

Neighbourhood

We are 20 minutes away from the lakes of Haute Charente and the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park, which offers many possibilities for walking/hiking. La Rochefoucauld is 15mn away, with its castle and a lovely cultural café, the Patio de la Roche. A little further away (45mn), Angoulême and Brantôme, nicknamed the Venice of the Perigord.
This is an area for people who want a quiet place, a walk in nature, a few charming villages and gardens to go to, maybe a creative workshop if one happens while you are here, and a day trip to charming little towns.
