Other things to note

This is our home, so there will probably be at least Lisa and I ( and our 2 cats ) in it. I try to maintain a tidy and clean environment and am quite sensitive to the needs of travellers ( having been one for a long time ) and to the needs of fellow vegans and people who're working to create a better world. You might hear me playing guitar at least in the mornings while I'm waiting for my coffee to boil and you may meet some interesting locals who occasionally drop in.

Kia ora. I'm a 63 year old New Zealander originally from Henderson in West Auckland. ( 2022 November 20 ) I bought this house way back in 1994 when I was living in Japan and I came back to Mangawhai to live in it in 2009. My parents first brought us up to Mangawhai on holiday in 1968 and they moved here to live from 1980 - 2000. I know this area well. I spent short periods here as a young adult and spent a year living out at Mangawhai Heads for a year in 1984 while working at Marsden Point Oil Refinery to save money for my first big O.E. ( overseas experience ) during which I travelled overland through Asia and Europe to the U.K - then back again - and then hitch-hiked around Australia. I went to Japan in 1990 on a working holiday visa and hitch-hiked for two months and ended up living there ( Nagoya, Yokkaichi and Kyoto ) for 6 years During that time I also travelled in China and Korea, the West Coast of the U.S.A., Mexico , Kenya, Madagascar, Isreal and Egypt. I speak Japanese and Indonesian and am qualified to teach English Language ( 16 years experience ) and I now teach music through guitar . I play guitar and percussion and paint/draw and do a lot of writing and am involved in a variety of political advocacy groups. ( environmental/human rights/energy / sustainable transport etc. I'm a non-smoker,non-drinker, vegan, a utility cyclist and a body-surfer. I enjoy being around other people who are out travelling the world, and with other progressive thinkers.

Mangawhai Village is a busy service centre for this area - and much moreso during the summer holiday season and Mangawhai Travellers Rest is in the centre of it. Nights are usually very quiet here. Every Saturday morning there is a very popular market right next door and there are a range of facilities and services provided within easy walking distance - or within a 5 minute drive - or about 10 minutes out to Mangawhai Heads Beach.

Favorite places: The sand dunes. The beach(es). The clifftop walk. The mangrove boardwalk.
Getting around: Walking , cycling ( there are bicycles you can use here ) or driving. Unfortunately there is NO public transport here - except for an hourly shuttle bus to the beach ( $2 ) in the summer holiday season. There are buses between Auckland ( 110 kms south ) and Whangarei ( 70 kms north ) from Kaiwaka on State Highway One - which is 14 kms west of Mangawhai Village. There is no transport between Mangawhai and Kaiwaka .
Mangawhai Village is the destination for people doing the Te Araroa Walk , through the whole of New Zealand and is on the preferred route of cyclists who're avoiding State Highway One.
