About this space

Our home is a simple, ecologically considerate and spiritually minded place. We aim to create a calm and gentle space in which we can share and learn from one another. The theme of plants runs through our lives and home; from the bookshelves, to the emerging forest garden, to the herbal cabinet and the resident houseplants.

The space

You will have the guest room, which is on the first floor at the back of the house overlooking the back lane and terrace. It is simply decorated with a double bed, chair, wardrobe and shelving unit.

There is a shared bathroom with toilet, sink and bath with shower fitting overhead. This is on a split level half way up the stairs, one flight of stairs down from the bedroom.

On the ground floor there is a shared living space, including a large, open living and dining area and a simple galley kitchen.

There is a south facing front garden. We are in the process of designing this into a medicinal and edible food forest and food growing space.

We are custodians of an older house, which has character, so don't expect sleek decor and modern fittings. However the house does have a positive and welcoming energy :)

The kitchen

The kitchen is simple and functional and you are welcome to use it at any time. Whilst the kitchen is a bit dated and in need of some renovation, it is perfectly functional for preparing delicious vegan meals.

We have a hob/stovetop for cooking on. Please note that we do not have a working oven at the moment.

There is a small undercounter fridge, if you are bringing lots of food that needs to be stored in a fridge please get in touch first as we'll need to make sure there's enough room.

We also have a blender, a hand blender, a food processor, dehydrator and a slow cooker in the kitchen, as well as all the pots, pans and utensils you may need for creating delicious plant based meals.

Other things to note

The stairs in the house are steep and over two flights, so may not be suitable for young children or those with limited mobility. Please get in contact if you would like more details about this or any other accessibility considerations.

The house is accessible by public transport (see details in the neighbourhood section), however if you are bringing a vehicle, parking is on the main road at the end of the street.

Myself and my husband Than are plant-lovers in so many ways. I am a herbalist-in-training, with a background in youth and community work. I enjoy open movement dance, wild swimming and cycling. Than is a healer, horticultural tutor and astrologer. He's an amateur botanist and loves to talk about plants, soil, and all things ecological. Than has been vegan for 14 years and Claire for 7 years. We try to live lightly with our Earth home, weaving vegan values and the practice of non-violence across all of life.

Neighbourhood

We are situated in the semi-rural large village of Chopwell in the Derwent Valley, with views over the surrounding valley. Red kites often fly overhead in the daytime which is a joy to watch!
Local walks:
Within a 10 minute walk there are woodland trails to the East, West, and North. To the south is the village of Blackhall Mill, where the River Derwent flows along the bottom of the valley. Beyond this there is the old railway path that leads towards Gateshead and Newcastle. There are many lovely woodland walks in the area.

Transport options:
Bus 47 from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Consett runs past the house, with a bus stop within a couple of minute's walk. Buses are every half hour during the daytime, and hourly after 6pm and on Sundays, so the house is fully accessible by public transport.
Access to a vehicle may be useful for daytips farther afield (places within an hour’s drive include Hadrian's Wall, Tyne Valley, Durham and the beautiful Northumberland coastline), however if you're happy travelling by bus to get around Newcastle/Gateshead and content with walks around the local area then there's no need. We can support with local transport for an additional cost if arranged in advance as we’re members of the local community electric car club.
Shops and supplies:
There are small convenience shops in the village, as well as a small Coop store. These have a very limited range of vegan groceries.
We get our veg from the local organic community farm, Gibside Community Farm. If you let us know in advance then we can order some extra veg from them for your arrival.
Eating out:
Newcastle-upon-Tyne has a selection of fully vegan cafes, restaurants, pubs and takeaways. Most are open during the daytime with a few also open on an evening. Whilst they are listed on Happy Cow (https://www.happycow.net/searchmap?s=3&location=Newcastle+Upon+Tyne%2C+England&filters=vegan&metric=km&limit=81&order=default&lat=54.9783&lng=-1.61778&zoom=11&page=1) we can also help to make suggestions based on your interests. Our favourite is Earthlings (https://earthlingsthc.co.uk/) 💚
Other local towns have fewer or no fully vegan/vegetarian options, however there are a few dotted around which we can advise on.
