About this space

My cottage is the coziest and quietest in the area, yet convenient to all amenities. It’s a short drive to an organic farm and vegan cooking school, a natural foods store, and Goose Rocks Beach. The house sits on a saltwater marsh; you can kayak on it when the tide is right!

The space

I live in this cottage most of the year because it’s so warm and inviting. The colours bleed in to each other, with textures and function. Upstairs is an open concept, with a queen bed surrounded by windows and the various fibers I work with ( yarns and fabrics mostly). There’s a short set of stairs leading up to an even cozier loft, with a yummy single bed and picture window looking into the forest of trees. Through other windows you can see the distant beach. The front and back of the property is salt marsh, with occasional herons and other wildlife. Two years ago a moose spent three days relaxing at our beach!

Guest access: A beach pass!

The kitchen

When I purchased this house 4 years ago I renovated the entire kitchen. None of the dishes or cutlery, appliances, countertops, or the sink have been exposed to meat ( my cat eats tinned fish but I don’t use my cutlery or dishes, and cleanup is minimal with him). The fridge has never seen a package of processed meat, the oven has never had a turkey in it, the iron pans have never seared any sentient being... The floor is marmoleum, and also freshly installed upon my moving in.

Nearly 20 years ago, at my first step off the ferry, and as so many do, I fell in love with Newfoundland. As one who has spent a lifetime being pulled to all places north, a year of searching led me to the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula and Ship Cove. I looked across the bay to see L'anse aux Meadows, and realizing I was also on the Viking Trail, my Scandinavian past life and connections were secured. This was home. The house was designed by my son in law and myself, and built ever so tightly by a local friend. It has captured the attention of every passerby since its inception. I've been coming here, sometimes several times a year, but always every summer. It's the perfect place for me to photograph, practice my music, work on my fibre art, write, and think. My other life is less dramatic but otherwise, not vastly different; I have a small cottage on the marsh in Maine, not far from my children and grandchildren, and where their family has an organic farm and vegan cooking school. It's been said I live a charmed, but simple, life...that is in part evidenced by the houses and places I've chosen, or have chosen me. Newfoundland, and more specifically Ship Cove, couldn't be a more authentic example of this.

Neighbourhood

The cottage sits in a small enclave of about 8, often empty cottages, on a dirt road loop, about a mile either side of the village and the harbour of Cape Porpoise, and Goose Rocks Beach Rd. You are less than 5 min drive, or a bike ride, to either of those attractions.
Another 5 minutes further and you hit the towns of Kennebunkport and Kennebunk, with all amenities.
Favorite places: The beach. And all the many surrounding beaches.
Frinklepod Farm: 8 min by car, this place has everything you need, including a cafe with delicious soups and sandwiches, all vegan, including the vegan Gouda Havart...

Organic vegetables and flowers, farm store, cooking classes...and, did I mention they are/everything is vegan ?!
