We are a vegan & vegetarian couple who own a vegan sweets bakery and vacation rental cottage. The vacation rental is part of Seaview Farms, which is primarily a banana farm with over 50 varieties of edible bananas. The cottage and surrounding farm use no products with animal ingredients. Even our 2 rescue dogs are vegan! We have been living in this neighborhood for 16+ years and are well acquainted with all it has to offer, including hidden, magical spots on the Big Island.

Neighbourhood

Rob & Bob’s home is located in Pāhoa, Hawaii, United States.
More information
This is in the Puna district of the Big Island, which is one of the least touristy areas in Hawaii. While the remoteness of the neighborhood is a major part of its appeal, it is a rural area and is not a resort area that some imagine all of Hawaii to be. Conservation zoning of the coastline keeps the area looking much the same as it did 100 years ago. We encourage guests to fly into Hilo, which is 90 minutes closer than Kona. If coming from Kona, all three routes to the cottage are beautiful and

Bananarama is near the Red Road in the small Kalapana Seaview neighborhood 1/3 mile (5 minute walk) from the gorgeous ocean-front park and cliffs, and 1 mile from Kehena black sand beach. The Red Road is an official Scenic Byway, and is the longest, least developed coastal road in all of Hawaii. One can easily spend a week within a half-hour drive of the cottage. This area is known for being very LGBT friendly. Local restaurants and natural foods stores feature many vegetarian and vegan options. Most stores and services are 20-30 minutes away and guests appreciate feeling away from it all along the Red Road. Plan to purchase groceries in Hilo for best prices and selection. The Big Island is BIG (roughly the size of Connecticut), and Kona beaches are at least 2 hours away. We recommend staying in at least 2 different areas on the island, and at least 3 nights at Bananarama, though 2 night stays are our minimum.
When searching travel sites for activities, search for the Kehena, Pahoa, and Puna areas. Sadly, the Kapoho area and Ahalanui Warm Ponds have been destroyed by recent lava flow. Lava Trees State Park and Pohoiki beach park remain closed, though Pohoiki is accessible by hiking 1 hour over jagged lava. Any site or listing mentioning those locations has NOT been recently updated.
Favorite places: Nearby you can
• View recent lava flows (10 minute drive)
• Swim with dolphins and enjoy the black sand at nearby Kehena Beach
• Snorkel at Kehena Beach or at any of a number of beaches in Hilo
• Visit several of the world's newest black sand beaches at and past MacKenzie State Park
• Take a helicopter over the recent lava
• Hike coastal trails on newly formed lava or in rainforest
• Dine and dance at Uncle Robert's outdoor awa bar with local food, drinks, crafts, and live Hawaiian music
• Watch humpback whales from the ocean-front park and cliffs (Dec-Mar)
Getting around: A car is strongly recommended to get around easily on the Big Island, including to and from Bananarama Cottage. A local bus stop is three blocks away with 3 times daily service to Pahoa, Hilo, and beyond.
20-30 minutes from Pahoa. 45-60 minutes from Hilo airport. 2.5 hours from Kona airport. 1 Hour from Volcanoes National Park. 10 minutes to Kalapana and MacKenzie State Park.
